I regret to announce the discontinuation of this blog's auto-postings.

You may have noticed that since the past few weeks, this blog has been flooded with spam emails from malicious visitors. This is because this particular blog's e-mailing address is compromised at the level of the email sources because these sources' group e-mailing systems are not designed for such a need as this blog of mine has experimented applying.

Before I set up this blog using blogger.com's auto-posting feature via email sources, I already anticipated this problem will occur sooner or later. Yet I was hoping that blogger.com programmers will be able to discover the weakness of this feature before the problem could happen. But as it turned out, the programmers are occupied with the more important improvements of their system. I only hope they will come across this problem sooner so that they may implement an appropriate solution to this minor vulnerability in their system.

It would also help if group e-mailing systems like my sources could find ways of securing their subscribers' email addresses particularly for usage or application such as auto-posting blogs.

Until blogger.com can find ways of allowing blogger users to block emails from unwanted sources, this blog of mine will remain to be inactive most of the time.

Thank you, and may the good Lord continue to feed you with your spiritual food which can easily be found from other sources.

Caveat emptor—"Let the buyer beware." Since a Supreme Court decision in 1817 that established the doctrine of caveat emptor, it has fallen to the buyer to assume responsibility for the value of the goods purchased. Only in recent years have consumer protection laws been passed that protect buyers from unscrupulous or duplicitous sellers. But if you were dealing with Jesus, you would have no worries—He always gives the best.

It was the custom at weddings to get the guests intoxicated, then, once their senses were dulled, finish off the night with the cheap stuff. But late in the celebration when the cheap wine had run out, Jesus turned water into the equivalent of a fine vintage wine. What Jesus did was typical of God—giving the very best every time. Romans 8:32 says that God gave us His Son—the very best He had. And by that gift, we know He will likewise give us everything we need.

There is no caveat emptor when we ask God for what we need. He is totally trustworthy—we can expect His best, whatever that turns out to be.

God's gifts put man's best dreams to shame.

The Weekend August 16-17
No Trial Is Beyond God's Ability to Help

Though Scripture is filled with promises from the Lord, we often struggle to accept them as true in our particular situation. But the Father wants us to believe that He's willing and able to do what He has said.

God has promised that we do not have to give in to the lure of sin. He sets a limit on temptation and provides a way out. Jesus saw the truth of this promise in His desert experience. The Holy Spirit led Him into the wilderness, where He was tempted by Satan. Our Savior successfully resisted the Devil's enticements by recalling who the Father is and what He promised. God limited Christ's temptation to three challenges. The way out was through Scripture's powerful truth.

The Lord has also pledged to keep us from stumbling. We live in a world that is full of land mines, which are either hidden from sight or disguised as something good. We do not seek them out. But once triggered, they lead to ungodliness. For example, Peter had a conversation with a servant girl and ended up denying that he knew Jesus (Matt. 26:69-72).

Like the apostle, we sometimes have trouble recognizing a situation's potential danger, but our Father understands what is involved. He knows just how we should respond.

Whether you face temptation or encounter an unexpected difficulty, the approach needs to be the same. Turn your attention to the Almighty, and keep it there until your mind is filled with the knowledge of Him. Allow the Scriptures to guide your prayers, and stand firm until the promised help comes.

Years ago a pastor stayed the night in a young couple's home. When he awoke the next morning, he heard a beautiful voice singing, "Nearer, My God to Thee," and inquired about it at breakfast. He said he was pleased to hear the old hymn but remembered it being slower than how he had heard it that morning. "Oh," replied the hostess, "that's because I wasn't paying too much attention to the words. It's a song my mom used to sing, and I've found it's a good one to boil eggs by; repeat the song five times rapidly for soft-boiled eggs and eight times for hard-boiled."

Some people believe that to truly worship God in song means to have no reservation, while others believe it is a private interaction. In reality, it doesn't matter how you sing during worship. What matters is that your heart and mind are focused on the words, and you are allowing the act of worship to draw you closer to the Lord.

If you feel there is something lacking in your worship time, try paying close attention to the words and intentionally singing them to your Lord and Savior. Invest your whole heart into worshipping with song, and you will gain a deeper, more intimate relationship with God.

When I worship, I would rather my heart be without words than my words be without heart.

God is Able

Jesus knew firsthand what it meant to live with limited financial resources, to have family question His actions (Mark 3:21), and to be rejected by those He sought to serve (John 6:66). However, He never allowed such circumstances to control His emotions or dictate His actions. Instead, He chose to trust that the Father was able to carry out His Word.

We are called to follow Christ's example and believe that God is able to do what He has promised. For example, the Bible pledges eternal salvation for everyone who asks for forgiveness in Jesus' name (Heb. 7:25). The Son satisfied His Father's justice by dying on the cross for all our sins--from "white lies" to unspeakably vile acts. When we have true faith in Jesus, God will forgive us and make us a new creation in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17). No matter what trouble we have caused, He invites us to draw near in faith and receive the gift of everlasting life.

Having saved us, God says He will establish us in truth (Rom. 16:25); after giving us a firm foundation in Christ, He builds us up in righteousness. Through the ministry of His Spirit and the Word, we start to see things as the Father does and learn what pleases Him.

By believing that God keeps His promises, we will become stronger in our faith and more at peace. Hardships that once would have thrown us off course will lose their power to shake us. Hope will replace discouragement, and trust will overcome doubt. Each time trouble comes, focus your attention upon your loving heavenly Father and His ability to care for you.

If there was ever a person who exemplified the right attitude during a time of trial, it was Horatio G. Spafford. Once a wealthy businessman, he was brought to financial ruination by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and shortly thereafter crushed by the news that all four of his daughters had died while crossing the Atlantic. Knowing that, it is astounding that he penned these words:

"When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul." *

Spafford and his wife, who survived the shipwreck, went on to have two more daughters and then founded a group with a mission to serve the poor of Jerusalem.

When we experience trials of any kind, it can be tempting to get angry, demand justice, and act irrationally, crying out, "It's not fair!" But if we can catch a glimpse of Jesus' face as He unfairly hung on the cross, perhaps we will recall how He responded during the greatest trial of all time and try to follow His example.

In the Midst of Painful Trials
Genesis 39:6-20

Joseph's enslavement lasted for 13 years and went from bad to worse. He lost his favored position in Potiphar's household and went to prison when the master's wife told lies about him. His hope for release from jail died when the king's servant forgot his promise (Gen. 40:14, 23). The future looked bleak.

Despite the evidence of circumstances, God was carrying out His plan to bless Joseph and benefit his family. Joseph was His appointed person to rescue them from the coming famine. To accomplish this, he had to learn the Egyptian language and culture, develop leadership abilities, and mature spiritually. The Lord's plan accomplished all of this.

Joseph learned two helpful lessons. First, the Lord is a faithful companion who uses our troubles to prepare us for His work. When the time came, Joseph was fully trained to become second-in-command to Pharaoh--the Egyptian king even testified that God's presence was with Joseph (Gen. 41:38). Second, when the Lord accomplishes His purposes, the difficulty will end. At God's chosen moment, Joseph was freed from jail, rewarded with a high-ranking appointment, and reconciled with his family. Though his boyhood was gone, he was greatly blessed by living in the center of the Father's will.

Adversity can be painful, but the Lord uses it to further His purposes and equip us to carry out His plan. What is He trying to teach you in the midst of your trials? Are you cooperating with Him? Remember, even Jesus suffered in order to fulfill God's redemptive purpose (Matt. 16:21).

The Corinthians were confused about spiritual gifts, so Paul devoted three chapters (1 Corinthians 12-14) to the subject, telling them their gifts were for the edifying (building up) of the body of Christ . As Warren Wiersbe points out in his book, Be What You Are, "Some of the Corinthians thought that spiritual gifts were toys to play with, so they were using them in a most unspiritual manner and bringing division and disgrace to the church."

But, as Wiersbe went on to observe, "Each believer has at least one spiritual gift, and as good stewards, we must use our gifts in the power of the Lord and for the glory of the Lord. Let all things be done unto edifying."

One of the best ways to discover our spiritual giftedness is to find out what we most enjoy doing for the Lord. Is it singing? Teaching? Visiting? Evangelizing? Calling on the sick? Working with infants or children? Serving on committees or leadership boards? Praying? Giving?

Whatever our gifts, it's not an ability to flaunt or a toy to play with. It's a tool to use for God's glory and for the building up of His church.

Catch on fire with enthusiasm and people will come for miles to watch you burn.

Walking Through Dark Valleys
Genesis 37:18-28

At the age of 17, Joseph lost almost everything. His family, his position as the favored son, his home, and his freedom were abruptly taken from him. How stunned he must have been by the hatred of his siblings and such overwhelming loss. But one thing he did take with him was his faith in God.

Life is like that at times for every one of us. Sudden changes in health or finances, the unexpected death of a loved one, or abandonment by a good friend can bring us into a dark season of life. We do not understand why God has allowed the trial or lets the pain continue. Joseph probably wondered the same things, but he managed to hold fast to his faith. He experienced the blessing of God's presence--even as a slave in a foreign land. And recognizing that God was with this young captive, his Egyptian master showed him favor (Gen. 39:2-3).

One of the keys to walking through dark valleys--those times when life is crumbling and the future looks dim--is to embrace the reality of God's presence with us. At the moment of salvation, the Holy Spirit comes to live permanently within the new Christian and seals him or her as belonging to God forever. Because of Him, we are never apart from the Lord. No circumstance, suffering, or loss can separate us from Him or His love (Rom. 8:35, 38-39).

Take a few minutes each day and reflect on Jesus' promise to be with us always (Matt. 28:20). The result will be that this truth becomes planted deep within your soul to sustain you in hard times.

Where's your heart?

I want to have you read and think about Mark 12:41-44:

Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood."

That is quite a picture, isn't it? Jesus sitting opposite the treasury, watching what people put in and how they put it in. I believe Jesus still watches during offering time. He watches how we give, what we give, and why we give. He said, "Where your treasure is, that is where your heart is also."

Notice He calls His disciples over and says, "This poor widow has put in more than everyone else." Why? Because He wanted them to understand that God measures your gift based on what you have.

Some people could give $1,000, and there is really no sacrifice at all. It never touches their life, never causes any kind of change of priorities. While for other people, $10 or $15 is a great sacrifice.

I believe some of the rich people Jesus points to in this passage were giving out of their abundance, but from heaven's viewpoint, they were putting it in with a teaspoon. But this little widow, who put in less than a penny, walked up with a shovelful--everything she had. It got heaven's attention.

Jim didn't like teaching the boys class at church, but he pressed on dutifully because he'd been asked and he didn't want to disappoint his pastor. What he really liked, however, was using his day off to do yard work at the church. He devoted every other Tuesday to mulching, mowing, trimming, clearing, raking, planting, and weeding. He knew that the appearance of the church's lawn was important in attracting visitors to the Sunday services where they could hear the Gospel. But truth be told, he was a poor Sunday school teacher.

One day after talking with his pastor, Jim realized he didn't have the gift of teaching. He had the gift of weeding—well, the gift of serving, of helping. When he began working more fully within his areas of giftedness, he was happier; and so was everyone else.

The Lord has made each of us differently, with different passions, abilities, and gifts. We're happier when we're doing what God has called and gifted us to do. Others will be blessed, too, and the Lord will be honored.

Be good and true; be patient; be undaunted. Leave your usefulness for God to estimate. He will see to it that you do not live your life in vain.

Servant Joseph
Genesis 37:1-17

Joseph is one of my favorite characters in the Bible. I mention him often because there's so much to learn from this successful young man. In fact, his youth is an important lesson in and of itself, and today's passage reveals two of his character traits that we should emulate.

First, he demonstrated a servant spirit early in life. In every exchange between Joseph and his father or masters, he embodies the very picture of respect and discipline. The young man never acts out against those in authority over him; on the contrary, he continually goes out of his way to serve others.

It is worth noting that Joseph is about 17 years of age in Genesis 37. The teen years are a time when the youth of any era are prone to retaliation and selfishness. However, this boy was clearly taught from an early age that a real man is a servant to others.

Second, Joseph realized at a young age that God was controlling his life. How else can you explain his relentless pursuit of excellence throughout his various trials? No matter what happened to him, Joseph always remembered the divine visions that the Father had laid on his heart in his teen years (Gen. 37:1-6). He was convinced that there was a plan for his life and that somehow, sometime, God would reveal what it was.

Whether you are 17 or 77, the lessons of Joseph's life are valuable. It is never too late to learn the art of service or to recognize God's perfect plan. Even better, it's never too late to help someone else discover these things.

Nikolaus Selnecker, a sixteenth century organist, music teacher, and Lutheran pastor wrote unusually rich hymns, one of which centered on the subject of God's faithfulness:

O faithful God, thanks be to Thee
Who dost forgive iniquity,
Thou grantest help in sin's distress,
And soul and body dost Thou bless.

Our God is faithful to forgive our sins, heal our hearts, and bless our lives. The very term faithfulness means proving true to one's word, adhering to promises made, being reliable, trustworthy, and utterly dependable. What He has said, He will do, and His promises are backed up by the attribute of His faithfulness.

The Holy Spirit longs to produce the same quality within us, for Galatians 5:22 says that the fruit of the Spirit is faithfulness. We're being Christ-like when we're true to our word, adhering to promises made, reliable, trustworthy, and utterly dependable.

It's important to us that God is faithful; and it's important to Him that we are the same.

Let me be Thine forever, Thou faithful God and Lord.

Godly Servanthood
John 13:13-16

When you hear the word "servant," does anybody immediately spring to mind? Perhaps you recall an extraordinarily helpful salesman or that wonderful woman at church who always takes care of every detail.

Godly servants are all around us, but sadly, we frequently take them for granted. This is a tragedy we need to correct--not only for their sakes, but for our own. You see, I firmly believe that the faithful service of righteous men and women will bring untold blessings to those whom they serve.

For instance, Joseph's story reveals a consistent thread: Wherever he was, the people he served prospered. Potiphar was certainly not a God-fearing man, yet even he recognized that prosperity came to him because of his slave. A second Old Testament illustration is Daniel, whose service to Babylonian kings included interpreting visions (Dan. 2, 4, 5).

In both examples, the leaders were blessed by their servants' actions. More than that, they came away with an awareness of the living God. And they also participated in the young men's success by offering them increased responsibilities and greater opportunities to serve (Gen. 39:1-6; Dan. 2:46-48; 5:29).

Find the people in your life who have the gift of godly service. Spend time with them, serving and working together forGod's glory. If you turn your nose up at someone doing "servant's work," you'll only cut yourself off from a relationship that could literally change your life. Instead, run toward these people, stand beside them, and ask, "How can I participate in your service?"

Jesus confronted human sorrow with divine theology. He wasn't afraid to remind two bereaved sisters of the doctrine of the Resurrection. He wasn't unsympathetic in doing so, and He certainly wasn't just ad-libbing biblical platitudes. He was heartbroken himself, weeping by the tomb, moved by the sorrow that hung over the town of Bethany that day. But He still spoke theology: "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?"

The most substantial comfort we can give others is biblical truth.

In a pluralist world where truth is considered relative and people have little patience for dogmatic statements, it's still true that nothing can quiet the troubled heart like the great doctrines, truths, realities, and assurances of God's Holy Word.

Jesus was a preacher of theology, but He was more. He was the God of truth who, having promised "Your brother will rise again," went on to say, "Lazarus, come forth!"

Thank God we have the truth and for Him who is the TRUTH!

Healthy theology is expressed not only in creed but in fruitful living, and holy living must be based on healthy theology.

July 19-20, 2008 The Weekend - A God of Love - Ephesians 3:17-19

The Lord doesn't base His love for us on our character or achievements. We know this because of God's promise in John 3:16 and His action in sending Jesus to die in our place.

The Savior's dealings with people show us the depth of God's love. Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus' disciples, ministered closely with the Lord for three years. In the end, Judas chose to betray Jesus. Even though Jesus knew what Judas would do, He never rejected him.

In another example of God's love, a woman was about to be stoned for committing adultery. She was condemned by the religious leaders. Jesus stepped in to protect her. Then, in love, He commanded her to sin no more.

And consider Peter. He loved Jesus and desired to follow Him always. In a moment of weakness however, Peter denied even knowing Christ. Jesus knew in advance the disciple would do this. But Jesus' love for the man didn't waver. In fact Jesus proved his love by appearing to Peter after the resurrection. Jesus gave Peter a prominent place in developing the church.

Two final examples of God's love include Zacchaeus, the greedy tax collector. He took advantage of his fellow citizens. And the Samaritan woman involved with a string of broken relationships and an immoral lifestyle. These facts didn't stop Jesus from approaching each of them and offering His forgiving love.

No one is beyond the reach of God's love. Through faith in Him, everyone, even the worst of sinners, can experience love's richness as His children.

Last words speak volumes. Whether it's the final words spoken on a deathbed, the words of an epitaph on a gravestone, the last thoughts we have before sleep, or what we say when parting from a loved one, last words reveal our first thoughts. Last words reveal priorities, hopes, and that which, left unsaid, would reveal a gap in who we are and what we believe.

While much of Samson's life leaves room for improvement, in his last words we find what, or rather Who, was at the core of his belief system: God. Samson had been captured, blinded, and enslaved by the Philistines. In a dying effort to bring defeat upon this enemy nation, Samson called out to God: "O Lord God, remember me, I pray! Strengthen me, I pray, just this once, O God" (Judges 16:28). And with his God-given strength, he pulled down the Philistine temple where he had been put on display. His dying words remind us of the thief crucified with Jesus who asked to be remembered by God (Luke 23:42-43). Both Samson's and the thief's final requests revealed what they hoped in most.

When it feels like you're taking your last breath, upon whom do you call? Whether you are living in or leaving this world, make sure your last words are faithful ones.

Whatever our trust is most in, that is our God.

God wants to give you rest. He wants to refresh and restore your soul, which is your mind, will and emotions. It’s so easy to get caught up in the busyness of life, and before long, your mind, will and emotions are so “spun up” that you can barely think straight! But even among the hustle of life, you can find rest, ease and relaxation. God wants you to enjoy your life. That’s why He tells us to come to Him. When you understand that God wants to take care of everything that concerns you, you will be able to find rest. Imagine that someone came up to you today and said, “Give me all your monthly bills, I’m going to pay them.” You’d get pretty excited, wouldn’t you? But it wouldn’t happen until you did your part to give that person your bills. They couldn’t pay them for you if you never release them. In the same way, when we release our cares and concerns to God, He promises to take care of them. Choose today to release your cares to the Lord. As you do, you’ll find that rest that He promises, and you’ll live the abundant life He has for you!

A Prayer for Today

Father in heaven, today I humbly come to you. I choose to cast my cares on You so that I can live in Your rest. Thank You for Your goodness to me. Help me find ways to share Your goodness with those around me today. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

There is an "unforgivable sin" mentioned in the Bible by Christ himself (Mark 3:29). It seems to have involved the Pharisees attributing Jesus' miracle power to Satan rather than to the Holy Spirit (Mark 3:22). Indeed, that is a serious infraction. Could it be committed today? Possibly—but it's (hopefully) not a sin that a Christian needs to worry about.

Strangely, Christians often think they have committed an "unforgivable sin." Not the one Christ referenced, but one of their own making. Even though the New Testament epistles mention no sin that is unforgivable, many believers live in a permanent state of guilt and shame over something(s) they have done: "What I did was awful. I'm so embarrassed and ashamed. I don't see how God could ever forgive me." They're convinced they will spend the rest of their life on earth being forgiven for everything except "that." But the New Testament says the only sins we haven't been forgiven for are the ones we haven't confessed (1 John 1:9).

Transforming your sin from unforgivable to forgiven is simply a matter of asking and receiving.

Thursday, July 17, 2008 - God's Continuing Faithfulness - 1 Corinthians 1:4-9

God doesn't lie. What the Father says He will do, He always accomplishes. His many promises are recorded in the Bible. He keeps every one.

Yesterday, Dr. Stanley wrote about God's faithfulness in directing him to become a preacher and providing a college scholarship. After Dr. Stanley was enrolled in the university, God continued to provide, perhaps not as much as Dr. Stanley wanted at times, but always enough. Dr. Stanley remembers kneeling by his bed in the dorm room. He told the Lord how little money he had, and asked for His help. In the mail came a letter from a neighbor back home with a check that would cover Dr. Stanley's expenses! God supplied what Dr. Stanley needed, just as He promised.

Later, when Dr. Stanley was a seminary student, he was invited to preach at a local church. That Sunday, when church was over, the leaders of the fellowship asked Dr. Stanley to become their pastor. The church indicated a willingness to wait a year until I graduated.

What a surprising turn of events. Dr. Stanley started to pray about it, confident the Lord would answer because He had promised. Under the Spirit's guidance, Dr. Stanley said yes to their offer.

God's faithfulness has continued throughout Dr. Stanley's life. He could not have imagined at the beginning that he'd preach for more than 50 years. But the Holy Spirit has always been with Dr. Stanley, teaching him what to say each time he prepared and delivered a sermon.

The God who leads us is ever faithful. That's why you and I can confidently carry out His plan, even when it surprises us.

Avoid Strife

Today's Scripture

“ It is an honor for a man to cease from strife ” (Proverbs 20:3)

Today's Word from Joel and Victoria

Strife is a very destructive force. It can creep into relationships by starting small, maybe through a comment or a wrong look from someone, and can then escalate into something much bigger. But when you choose to cease from strife and overlook an offense, you are acting honorably, and you are honoring God. How do you avoid strife? The Bible tells us that love covers over many offenses. It means that you give people the benefit of the doubt. You consider what they may be going through over how they reacted to you. Maybe someone was short with you at the office, but they may have a loved one in the hospital, or they may have some other concern. Instead of getting upset, walk in love—be patient, be kind to them. Choose to avoid strife. Look for ways to walk in unity with the people in your life. The Bible says that He has commanded the blessing when we walk and live in unity. Choose unity today and watch the hand of the Lord move mightily on your behalf!

A Prayer for Today

Father God, today I choose Your ways. I invite Your plan to unfold in my life. Help me to avoid strife so I can walk in peace and unity and honor you all the days of my life. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

How many things in life (besides death and taxes) are absolutely certain? Even things like the rising and setting of the sun have a condition attached to them (Jeremiah 31:35-37). When we stop and analyze life's contingencies, it quickly becomes apparent that, outside of God's promises, very little in life is certain.
It's ironic that one of God's certain promises concerns an area in which we feel very uncertain: our ability to escape temptation. When tempted, we suddenly feel unstable, insecure, and uncertain about the outcome. But here is the two-fold certainty God has provided concerning temptation: You will never be tempted beyond your ability—that is, beyond your spiritual maturity level. And, there will always—always—be a way to escape the temptation. By trusting in God's provision, you will be able to "bear [the temptation]" and ultimately escape it. God has said it, and that makes it certain.
Whatever tempts you is covered by this two-fold provision. Ask God to reveal to you the "way of escape" He has promised to provide, and you will be able to bear any temptation.
Most people who fly from temptation usually leave a forwarding address.

Wednesday, July 16, 2008 - Reflecting on God's Faithfulness -- Lamentations 3:22-23

Our heavenly Father is always faithful to His promises. We can be certain of this because He made them based upon His unchanging character and His Son Jesus Christ.

Many times during the years, Doctor Stanley has been the beneficiary of God's faithfulness to His Word. For example, Romans 10:13 says, "Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved." At age 12, Dr. Stanley believed in Jesus as his Savior. Despite his lack of Bible knowledge, Dr. Stanley recognized that he was a sinner. Once he trusted the Lord to forgive his sins, Jesus save Dr. Stanley just as His word said.

Around age 14, Dr. Stanley began thinking about his future and wondering what direction it would take. On the basis of God promises, Dr. Stanley believed God would speak to him and reveal His plans for his life.

In time, God made it clear that He wanted Dr. Stanley to become a preacher. So, Dr. Stanley began putting money away for college. His source of income was a paper route, which meant his savings account grew by very small amounts. When Dr. Stanley looked at its balance, he didn't see how he could ever afford to enroll.

The Lord then brought Proverbs 3:5-6 to life for Dr. Stanley. God orchestrated a series of events that led to Dr. Stanley receiving a full scholarship. If Dr. Stanley had depended on his own thinking, he might have given up on his dream of college. Because Dr. Stanley trusted in God, He provided what Dr. Stanley needed to fulfill His plan.

Think about how God has worked in your life. What testimony could you give of His faithfulness to you?

Give Cheerfully

God has set up a system to bless and prosper you; it’s the system of sowing and reaping. When you give, God promises that blessings will come back to you in greater measure. Just like sowing a seed in the ground produces an abundant harvest, when you sow financially, you will reap a harvest of blessing in your life in return. Notice in the verse that God is concerned more about how we give than what we give. He loves it when you give with a cheerful heart because that shows that you are trusting in His promises. It shows that you love Him and love following His commands. When you understand that God wants to bless you, you can’t help but give with a cheerful heart! Meditate on His wonderful blessings today and allow that joyful attitude to rise up in your heart. Be a cheerful giver and expect His increase and blessing in every area of your life.

A Prayer for Today

Father in heaven, today I come before You giving You all that I am. I choose to be a cheerful giver because I love You. Help me to honor You in everything I say and do. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Giving to Get?

Any time I give, I expect a blessing to return. It is a law that we find in Scripture. It is a promise of Jesus.

But you know what? That is not my main motivation for giving. And that should not be our heart for giving. Jesus says in Luke 6:32-38,

"But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you."

What is the heart of this whole thing? Jesus said, "Don't love just to get love back; don't do good just so that good might be done back to you; don't lend just hoping to get something back."

He makes it clear that if you do those things for the right motivation, it will come back to you. Your reward will be great.

Do not give with the motivation of just getting something back. Non-Christians have that motivation! How does that set you apart from them? Give out of a higher motivation.

Since the seventh century A.D., fingerprints have been the standard method of identifying individuals. But science has discovered new ways to establish the uniqueness of people: DNA, retina scans, hair analysis, and voice prints are some of the most commonly used methods. But there is one area shared in common by all human beings: temptation. And that includes Jesus Christ.
After all, Jesus was a man—a human being like the rest of us. And He experienced temptations, too (Matthew 4:1-11). Many new Christians are surprised to find that Jesus was not free of temptation. He was frequently tempted, but He was free of sin (Hebrews 4:15). In that regard, He was unique in human history—the only human being never to sin. When we are tempted, we have to remember that there is "nothing new under the sun" (Ecclesiastes 1:9), including the desire to sin. Yes, the times and circumstances change, but not our fallen human nature. The lusts of the flesh are the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow (James 1:14).
Never use "uniqueness" as an excuse for yielding to temptation. Temptation is common to man, and victory over temptation can be common to those who face it in Jesus.

Prayer, meditation, and temptation make a minister.

An example of the antichrist movement is the campaign to remove Christian symbols from public places. Advocates use buzzwords like "religious freedom" to mean freedom from religion. Those listening, even some believers, are fooled into agreeing that worship should be private. The subtle motive often goes unnoticed to push Jesus out of society.

The world finds Christ offensive. Many people today claim we each can design our own belief system. But Jesus said faith in Him is the only way to a relationship with the Father.

Another worldly, antichrist idea is doing what feels right is fine, as long as no one gets hurt. Yet, Jesus taught that sin of any action, thought, or attitude contrary to God's principles has consequences.

Antichrist philosophies will often sound persuasive because Satan designs lies to appeal to human nature. Therefore, believers must know right from wrong. The Lord has provided three guides for safely navigating through life.

First, the Holy Spirit enables us to discern God's facts from Satan's fiction. Next, Scripture explains the truth about the Trinity and the divine plan for mankind. Finally, we have access to righteous people who preach and teach authentic Christianity.

Even if some unbelievers try to erase Jesus Christ's name from society, they can't remove all of His followers. We need to stand firmly rooted in Scripture and proclaim the gospel. God can work through us and win souls for His glory.

The Power of Peace

No matter what may be going on all around you today, you can still live in peace. The scripture encourages us to not let our hearts be troubled. In other words, don’t meditate on all the negative things in this world to the point that it steals your peace. If you have fear, worry or anxiety about anything, recognize that those feelings aren’t from God because He has promised to give you a spirit of power, love and a sound mind. There is tremendous power in peace. When you are at peace internally, you can think more clearly. You can hear the voice of God more easily. You’ll make better decisions. Even your physical body responds to peace. The enemy knows this, and his goal is to steal your peace. He tries to set you up to get upset. Today's Word from Joel and Victoria

God cares so much about you today. Not only does He love and care about you, He cares about the things that concern you as well. If you have concerns, worry or anxiety about something in your life today; finances, relationships, your job or anything else, know that your Heavenly Father already has a plan to take care of those things for you. It’s a good plan, and He wants to show Himself strong on your behalf. The scripture reminds us that the lilies of the field and the birds of the air are cared for, how much more will your Heavenly Father take care of you? Make the decision today to cast all of your anxiety on Him by choosing to trust that He is going to take care of you. Refuse to dwell on your problems and don’t allow them to steal your peace and joy any longer. Instead, choose to meditate on His Word and confess God’s promises over your life. As you cast your cares on Him, you’ll experience His peace and joy, and you will live the life of blessing He has in store for you.

Father in heaven, thank You for caring for me. I choose today to cast my cares on You and trust that You are working behind the scenes on my behalf. I bless and magnify You today. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

In this day of increasing gas prices, drivers are looking for every advantage. One of the most overlooked strategies is keeping tires properly inflated. A group of Carnegie Mellon University students determined that the average driver could save $432 annually (when gas is $3 per gallon) by keeping tires at the recommended pressure.*
Tires usually lose air pressure v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y. If your car's engine has a problem, you notice it immediately. But you can still drive on under-inflated tires—just not very efficiently. We lose "efficiency" in the Christian life the same way tires lose air pressure: very slowly. When we finally are stopped dead in our tracks by sin or failure, it's not because of a blowout. It's because we failed to perform daily spiritual maintenance: prayer, worship, Bible study, self-denial, service, and obedience. Over months or years we can grow so spiritually inefficient that we fail to notice.
Have you checked your spiritual air pressure lately? Are you operating for the Lord at peak efficiency? Failing to perform daily maintenance can ultimately leave you stranded.
Faith is deliberate confidence in the character of God whose ways you may not understand at the time.

Monday, July 14, 2008 - The Spirit of the Antichrist - 1 John 4:1-3

When the word "antichrist" is used, the reference is usually to the Antichrist, who will spread rebellion across the earth. But, two additional meanings are found in 1 John 4.

First, the expression alludes to a spirit or attitude opposed to Jesus. Second, it describes men and woman who embody that spirit by contradicting scriptural truth.

An anti-Christ mindset is active in our culture. Newspapers, movies, and books dispute the Lord's deity. They then cast doubt on the truth of His death and resurrection. Instead of embracing Jesus as God's Son and Savior of the world, antichrists seek to recast Him as a wise teacher or good man with high ideals.

Such denials of Christ are not logical. In John 14:6, the Lord said of Himself, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me." If Jesus is something other than what He claimed, He must be either a fraud or a lunatic. In which case, the antichrists would be holding up a most undesirable person as a "wise teacher."

Denying Christ's deity is also spiritually unsound. If Jesus were not the Son of God, then His death would have been permanent. Without His resurrection, there could be no such thing as salvation by faith.

Some antichrists, while denying Jesus, nevertheless claim to believe in God and heaven. Yet Matthew 10:33 states their denial will keep them from eternity with the Father.

The Bible insists Jesus is God's Son. He died for our sins and rose again. To combat the spirit of antichrist, we must read Scripture and believe it.

It's natural to rejoice when large crowds come to church, when souls are saved, when a loved one makes a wise decision, and when the sun shines brightly. It was like that when the Seventy returned from their missions trip. "Lord," they said, "even the demons are subject to us in Your name." Jesus acknowledged their success, but He tactfully warned them about basing their joy on successes they had seen in their work for Him. Their real joy should be based on their names being written in heaven.

In life and in ministry, the tide comes in and goes out. We labor in season and out of season. It's fine to rejoice when we see observable results. But Jesus, in His infinite wisdom, reminds us that there is a greater basis for joy. Success in life comes and goes, but He has redeemed us for eternity. Our greatest joy is just in Him, and the best rejoicing is in the Lord.

The name of Jesus is . . . light . . . food . . . oil . . . salt . . . honey in the mouth, melody in the ear, joy in the heart, and at the same time, medicine.

July 12-13, 2008, The weekend - Our Purpose in God's Plan - 1 Peter 4:9-11

God doesn't need the help of any man or woman to accomplish His purposes. However, He has chosen to spread the gospel by means of His children. As one person tells another the good news of Jesus Christ, the story of hope and love spreads around the globe.

Consider each modern Christian is a spiritual descendant of the original disciples. Those men spent several years with Jesus. After His ascension, they preached what they'd learned from Him to anyone who'd listen. They also offered a helping hand where needed.

The grace and mercy demonstrated in word and action had a ripple effect. It spread outward from those first followers of Christ. It went across distance and time to hundreds, then thousands and even billions of individuals around the world.

But some people still have never heard Jesus loves them and died for their sins. This is why we're called to serve family, friends, and neighbors. Loved ones see God's grace lived out when we offer a helping hand, share the gospel, or lift them up in prayer.

To deny this call is to sin against the Lord. Our purpose is to serve God. The primary way we do that is by caring for those around us.

We can offer God many reasons for not serving Him such as weakness, inadequacy, and fear. But no excuse changes the mandate of Scripture. We are the Lord's feet, hands, and voice on earth. We go where He wills. We help those in need. We tell all about the love of Jesus.

You Are An Overcomer

God created you to be an overcomer! Sometimes, it's easy to get down and discouraged when things aren't going the way you planned. If you go around thinking, "It's never going to work out" or "It's never going to get better", you limit what God can do. But if, when you face difficulties, you dig your heels in—knowing that God is bigger than your problems—your faith will open the door for God to turn your negative situation around!

Isaiah 54:17 says that, "No weapon formed against you will prosper. This is your heritage as children of the Lord." Notice you have a heritage. You have rights and privileges because you belong to Christ. As long as you keep God first place in your life, you have a hedge of protection around you, a hedge of favor, and a hedge of mercy. When difficulties come, because you are His child and honor Him, those difficulties won't prosper in your life. When it's all said and done, God will take what the enemy meant for evil and turn it around for your good.

Declare over yourself, by faith, that you will overcome every obstacle. Declare that every dream and desire God placed in your heart will come to pass. Declare that you have the favor of God and that whatever you set your hand to will prosper. As you speak those words of faith, the Lord will work on your behalf and you will live as an overcomer all the days of your life!

Critics of God say the existence of evil proves His imperfections: "If God was all-powerful, He would stamp out evil in the world. If He was all-loving, He would rescue those who suffer due to evil acts. Either God is not all-powerful or He's not all-loving. Either way, He is an imperfect God."

A righteous God and the existence of evil in His world do raise questions. But the Bible answers them: God is not the cause of evil. Evil is a manifestation of sin; and because "God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5), He is not the cause of evil. But God uses evil to demonstrate His power and accomplish His purposes. When Samson chose to marry a Philistine woman—God used it as a means to bring judgment upon this evil nation. Or when Joseph's brothers sold him into slavery—God used that evil act to provide a safe haven for Joseph's family in a time of famine. With God, evil never has the upper hand. If you are feeling the effects of an evil act, know that God will cause good to come from it.

The ultimate goal of all creation is God's glory—and that includes the evil that temporarily lurks within it.

God is so powerful that He can direct any evil to a good end.

Martha of Bethany welcomed Jesus into her home. Her act of service may seem small compared to works like the apostle Paul's missionary trips and letters. But she and her family provided a place of rest and refreshment for the Savior. This act must have been a welcome pause in His busy week.

It's true that Jesus once corrected Martha for placing too much emphasis on the details of hospitality. But when He visited her home, He no doubt anticipated food and fellowship with people He loved.

God's plan for every believer is made up of a lifetime of small opportunities. No matter what our career or calling may be. We should each seek ways to serve the Lord daily. We do this by ministering wherever we are to family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers.

The Lord gives His children gifts and talents for fulfilling His purpose. So, we know He wants to use us. The question we should be asking is, "Can God use me?" That is, have we made ourselves available to follow Him in any circumstance?

The areas of service set aside specifically for us are waiting. No one knows ahead of time exactly what God will require, but we can be sure He'll equip us with the right tools for the task.

Are you ready to say "yes, God can use me?" Tell the Lord that you're available to work for Him in any way He desires. He will respond by placing people and opportunities in your path. Through His strength, you'll do more to further the kingdom than you ever imagined. One day and one small act of service at a time.

Is there a situation in your life today that seems impossible? As a child of the Most High God, you are not limited by what you see. You are not limited by your circumstances, the economy, or what others say because with God all things are possible! It doesn't matter how it may look in the natural, when you see things through your eyes of faith, you will see new possibilities. You will see the answer that is on its way!

It all starts by having a grateful attitude: an attitude of faith and expectancy. When you declare the promises of God over your life and meditate on His Word, it activates faith in your heart. Faith draws the good things of God into your life. When you wake up every morning, declare that with God all things are possible. Declare that you are blessed and you cannot be cursed. Declare that you are above only and not beneath. Expect God's favor and blessing in your life every day. As you do, you will see Him move on your behalf, and you'll see new levels of possibility in every area of your life!

A Prayer for Today

Father in heaven, thank You for making a way where there seems to be no way. I choose an attitude of faith and expectancy today. Work in my heart and life that I may be a living testimony of Your goodness to those around me. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Water for Your Soul

Where do you find water for the soul? Jesus gave an answer one October day in Jerusalem. People had packed the streets for the annual reenactment of the rock-giving-water miracle of Moses. Each morning a priest filled a golden pitcher with water from the Gihon spring and carried it down a people-lined path to the temple. He did this every day, once a day, for seven days. “On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water’ ” (John 7:37–38).

He “stood and shouted” (NLT). The traditional rabbinic teaching posture was sitting and speaking. But Jesus stood up and shouted out. Forget a kind clearing of the throat. God was pounding his gavel on heaven’s bench. Christ demanded attention.

He shouted because his time was short. The sand in the neck of his hourglass was down to measurable grains. In six months he’d be dragging a cross through these streets. And the people? The people thirsted. They needed water, not for their throats, but for their hearts. So Jesus invited: Are your insides starting to shrivel? Drink me.

Internalize him. Ingest him. Welcome him into the inner workings of your life. Let Christ be the water of your soul.

Toward this end, I give you this tool: a prayer for the thirsty heart. Carry it just as a cyclist carries a water bottle. The prayer outlines four essential fluids for soul hydration: God’s work, God’s energy, his lordship, and his love. You’ll find the prayer easy to remember. Just think of the word W-E-L-L.

Lord, I come thirsty. I come to drink, to receive. I receive your work on the cross and in your resurrection. My sins are pardoned, and my death is defeated. I receive your energy. Empowered by your Holy Spirit, I can do all things through Christ, who gives me strength. I receive your lordship. I belong to you. Nothing comes to me that hasn’t passed through you. And I receive your love. Nothing can separate me from your love.

Don’t you need regular sips from God’s reservoir? I do. I’ve offered this prayer in countless situations: stressful meetings, dull days, long drives, demanding trips, character-testing decisions. Many times a day I step to the underground spring of God and receive anew his work for my sin and death, the energy of his Spirit, his lordship, and his love.

Drink with me from his bottomless well. You don’t have to live with a dehydrated heart.

Receive Christ’s work on the cross,
the energy of his Spirit,
his lordship over your life,
his unending, unfailing love.

Drink deeply and often. And out of you will flow rivers of living water.

Sometimes we think that God wants us to begin and complete some great task for Him, but often we are links in the chain. We don't always see the fruitfulness of our work for Him, or perhaps we're given the joy of harvesting the crop that others have planted.

In his book, The Patented Preacher, about preaching and worship, Warren Wiersbe wrote, "I learned very early in my ministry that I was not an evangelist. Although I've seen people come to Christ through my ministry, I've always felt I was a failure when it came to evangelism. One of the few benefits of growing older is a better perspective. Now I'm learning that my teaching and writing ministries have enabled others to lead people to Christ, so my labors have not been in vain. But I've had my hours of discouragement and the feeling of failure."

God has promised to complete His work in us (Philippians 1:6); but His work through us is a different matter. Sometimes we plant, sometimes we water, sometimes we harvest. We're seldom able to do all three, but we labor in the confidence that God will give the increase.

God gives us the spiritual gifts He wants us to have; He puts us in the places He wants us to serve; and He gives the blessings He wants us to enjoy.
